Family History

Francis George was born in 1897 the son of Thomas a coal miner (hewer) and Charlotte Rose (née Botham. Thomas was born in 1862 at Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire while Charlotte was born in 1866 at Rugby. Married in 1896, they had seven children, five surviving infancy - Mabel b.1889 Hyson Green, Annie b.1891 Bulwell, Gertrude b.1894 Bulwell, Francis George b.1897 Nottingham Road, East Kirkby and Leslie b.1904 Nuncargate, East Kirkby. In 1901 they lived at Low Moor Road, Kirkby in Ashfield.In 1911, they lived at 52, Broxtowe Drive, Mansfield. Mabel, Annie and Gertrude were cotton cleaners. Thomas and Charlotte Rose later lived at 69, Denmeark Terrace, Wood Street, Mansfield.

He is also commemorated on his parents' headstone in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield. The inscription reads: " In loving memory of Thomas beloved husband of Charlotte Rose, died Feb 15th 1936 aged 74 years, also Charlotte his beloved wife who died Dec 23rd 1946 aged 82 yrs 'together again' also Francis George, their beloved son who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War Oct 14th 1918 aged 21 yrs ' memories of old are purer than gold' "
