Walter was born in Cadoxton Glamorgan and was the son of William a labourer in public works and Eliza Stone née Grey of 7 Kitchener Drive, Mansfield. His father William was born in 1855 in Exeter and his mother Eliza was born in 1857 also in Exeter, they married in 1876 in Exeter and went on to have 10 children. Their children were : - William b1877 Exeter, Gertrude b1880 Exeter, Edith b1881 Exeter, Annie b1887 Monmouth, Eva b1888 Monmouth, Fred b1892 Cornwall, Walter b1895 Cadoxton Glamorgan, Harry b1895 Llantwit, Glamorgan, Florrie b1899 Staines,Middlesex and John b1901 Walthamstow, Middlesex. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 New Road, Grovesend, Glamorgan and are shown as:- William 56 yrs head of the family and a labourer in public works, he is living with his wife Eliza 54 yrs and their children William 34 yrs a labourer in public works, Fred 19 yrs a labourer in public works, Walter 17 yrs a labourer in public works, Harry 16 yrs a fireman on a locomotive, Florrie 12 yrs a scholar and John 10 yrs a scholar.
Walter enlisted in Mansfield, he gave his place of birth as Glamorgan, and served as a Lance Corporal with the 2/7th Sherwood Foresters. His medal index card shows he first entered a theatre of war on 28th August 1915 in France. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial. He was awarded the three medals 1915 Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal. This man is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
The family headstone in Nottingham Road Cemetery, Mansfield has an inscription which reads, " In loving memory of Eliza beloved wife of William Stone who entered into rest April 19th 1932 aged 71 years 'peace perfect peace' also L/Corp Walter Stone their beloved son who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War March 18th 1918 aged 25 years.
