Family History

Joseph Wingate was born in 1897 at Ruddington, he was the son of George a brickyard labourer and Sarah Ann Wingate née Wright of Woodley Street, Ruddington. George was born in 1865 at Boston, Sarah Ann Wright was born in 1871 at Ruddington, they were married on 28th June 1891 at St Mary’s Church, Nottingham, they had 6 children. In the 1911 census the family were living at Woodley Street, Ruddington, George giving his age as 40 yrs is a brickyard labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 38 yrs and their children, Eliza 18 yrs a bobbin winder, Alice 17 yrs a bobbin winder, Joseph 14 yrs an assistant hair dresser, John 10 yrs, Hilda 8 yrs and Ada 4 yrs of age.

Military History

Lance Corporal Joseph Wingate enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 20th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on theTyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
