Samuel was the son of Joseph Mosely Lilley and Margaret Toone Lilley nee Lord. Joseph was born in Derby in 1872 (O/N/D Derby) and Margaret in Church Greasley, Derbyshire, in about 1873. They were married in 1896 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had three children, Samuel b. 1898 (J/A/S Nottingham), Edgar b. 7 May 1906 (1906 A/M/J Basford) and May [Vera May] birth registered 1908 J/F/M Basford. While Samuel was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham, his two siblings were born in Hucknall. In 1901 Joseph (28), a grocer's shop assistant, and Margaret (27) were living at 3 Chapel Yard, Hucknall Torkard, with their two-year old son, Samuel. By 1911 Joseph (38) was a grocery store manager and he and his wife were living at 64 Orchard Street, Hucknall Torkard, with their three children, Samuel (12), Edgar (4) and May (3). Joseph died at the age of 51 on 12 October 1923 (December Basford). He was a grocery manager for the Co-operative Society and was living at 4 King Edward Street, Hucknall. His widow, Margaret, died aged 82 in 1955 (June Basford).
Private Samuel Thomas Joseph Lee enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Hucknall , he served with the 7th battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) He was killed in action on 18th September 1918 having no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
