William married Emily (nee Wilson) in 1898 (J/A/S), registration district Mansfield. Their daughter, Evelyn A., was born about 1899 and at the time of the 1901 Census the family was living at 12 Rock Valley, Mansfield. The family has not yet been traced on the 1911 census but Evelyn may have died in 1911 (A/M/J) when she was 12 years old. At the time of William's death the family home was at 14 Wood Street, Mansfield. Emily died on 9 November 1947 aged 67.
Hood Bn. Royal Naval Division. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 8 December 1915 and mobilised on 7 July 1917. He was in the draft for the BEF on 19 November 1917 joining Hood Battalion on 27 November 1917. William died of wounds in the 48th Casualty Clearing Station on 30 December 1917 and is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France (grave ref. VIII.D.2). CWGC - History of Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery (extract): 'Etricourt was occupied by Commonwealth troops at the beginning of April 1917 during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line. It was lost on the 23 March 1918 when the Germans advanced, but regained at the beginning of September. The cemetery was begun in 1917 and used until March 1918, mainly by the 21st and 48th Casualty Clearing Stations posted at Ypres, and to a small extent by the Germans, who knew it as "Etricourt Old English Cemetery".' CWGC headstone personal inscription: "Ever in our thoughts". Inscription on family gravestone, Mansfield (Nottingham Road) Cemetery: 'In loving memory of Emily Hall died Nov. 9th 1947 aged 67 years. Also William Hall husband of the above killed in action Dec. 30th 1917 aged 42 years.' William Hall is commemorated in a book of remembrance held by Mansfield District Council.
