Family History

Joseph Ghilks was born in Broomhills, Staffordshire, he was baptised on 22nd June 1884 at Pelsall, Staffordshire and was the son of the late John a coal miner hewer and Jane Ghilks née Holland. His father John Ghilks was born in 1858 at Ogley Hay, Staffordshire, he died in 1901 aged 43 yrs, his mother Sarah Jane Holland was born in 1858 at Pelsall, Staffordshire, they were married on 25th December 1879 at Pelsall, they went on to have the following children, Julia b1881, John b1882, Peter b1883, Joseph b1884, Frederick b1886, Allen b1888, Thomas b1890, Elizabeth b1892, Ethel b1894 and Emma b1896 all were born in Staffordshire. Joseph married his wfie Ellen Elizabeth Hawley (born 18th June 1886 Droylsdon, Lancashie) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 34 Spion Kop Warsop Mansfield and had the following children, Ellen Elizabeth born September 1909, Gladys Jane born November 1911 and Hilda born February 1914. In the 1911 census the Joseph and his wife Ellen are living at 12 Langhan Street, Waterloo Ashton Under Lyne and are shown as Joseph 26 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ellen Elizabeth 24 yrs. Following his death his widow Ellen was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 10th March 1919.

Military History

Gunner Joseph Ghilks enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Warsop, he served with the 59th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He landed in France on 1st September 1915 and was killed in action on 22nd August 1918 he is buried at Wailly Orchard Cemetery, France.
