Family History

William Henry Stringer was born in 1889 he was the son of William a coal miner contractor and the late Hannah Stringer née Chambers of 76 Mansfield Road, Pleasley. William was born in 1870 at Old Hill Staffordshire, Hannah Chambers was born in 1864 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, she died in 1910 aged 46 yrs, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Stourbridge registration district, they had 7 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his widowed father William 41 yrs a coal miner is living at 76 Mansfield Road, Pleasley with his children, William Henry21 yrs a coal miner loader, Lois 18 yrs and Gerty 8 years old.

Military History

Private William Henry Stringer enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Pleasley, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 13th April 1916 and is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, France.
