Arthur Ralph Johnson was born in 1887 the son of William a bricklayer and Ellen Johnson née Oakden of 109 Watnall Road, Hucknall. William was born in 1864 at Hucknall, Ellen Oakden was born in 1863 at Bulwell, married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Arthur b1887, Ernest b1889, Elizabeth b1892, May b1894, and George b1900 all were born in Hucknall. In 1911 the family are living at 109 Watnall Road, Hucknall and are shown as Ellen Johnson 48 yrs married a laundress, she is living with her children, Arthur 24 yrs a colliery on setter, Ernest 22 yrs a bricklayer, Elizabeth 19 yrs a blouse maker, May 17 yrs and William 11 yrs. In 1911 his father William is living at Wellington Union Workhouse, Wellington he is shown as an inmate 48 yrs and a bricklayer.

Military History

Rifleman Arthur Ralph Johnson enlisted in Hucknall , he was killed in action on 1st February 1917. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, The Somme.
