Family History

William Kirk (junior) was born in 1893 he was the son William Kirk (senior) a plain net maker (lace trade)and Elizabeth Kirk nee Metcalf of 20 Pipe Street Sneinton Nottingham. William (senior) was born in 1867 at Nottingham, Elizabeth Metcalf was born in 1868 at Richmond, Yorkshire, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 21 Moody Street, Nottingham, William (senior) is 44 yrs and a plain net maker in the lace trade, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their 10 children, William (junior) 17 yrs is a lace dresser

Military History

Private William Kirk enlisted at Nottingham and served in Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, during 1915. He was transferred to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, 12th August 1916, age 22, whilst in the line between Montauban and Longueval, France during the Battle of the Somme. Havin g no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
