Family history

Harold Alexander Gregg was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Thomas a plumber and his first wife the late Sarah Ann Gregg née Ball of Nottingham.

His father Thomas was born in 1850 at Sutton in Ashfield he died in 1911 aged 61 yrs his mother Sarah Ann Ball was born in 1851 at Mansfield, she died in 1890 aged 39 yrs, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census Harold Alexander is a boarder at 67 Moreland Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham, he is shown as being 24 yrs single and a house painer he is boarding with his future wife Emma Reynold, 24 yrs single and a picture framer and her family.

In the same 1911 census his father is living at 97 Arkwright Street, Nottingham, he is 61 yrs and a plumber he is living with his second wife Eliza Gregg 49 yrs and his son Reginald Arthur Gregg 20 yrs helping in his fathers business.

Harold was the husband of Emma Reynolds (born 21st June 1886 ) they were married on 2nd August 1913 at Christophers Church, Sneinton, Nottingham they lived at 52, Rossington Rd., Sneinton Dale, Nottingham they had a daughter Edna May born 12th September 1915

Commncing 7th July 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private Harry Gregg, enlisted at Nottingham on 10th December 1915, giving his address as 52 Rossington Road, Nottingham, he was a painter and paeper hanger, his next of kin was his wife Emma of the same address he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 4th September 1916 and was posted to the DurhamLight Infantry, on 8th September 1917 he was posted to the 348th Works Company Labour Corps, he died of pneumonia on 26th November 1918 at St John's VAD Hospital, Hull. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.. Inscription on gravestone: 'Peace, perfect peace'. (Grave ref 10121)
