Family History

Herbert Hodgkinson was born in 1891 at Hucknall and was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Harriett Hodgkinson née Gurnhill of 33 Scarborough Crescent Maltby Rotherham. His father William was born in 1860 at Blidworth, his mother Harriett Gurnhill was born in 1863 also at Blidworth, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Annie Sarah b1882 Blidworth, Maud Mary b1883 Blidworth, Henry b1888 Hucknall, Herbert b1891 Hucknall, Hetty b1893 Hucknall and Edith b1901 Hucknall. In the 1911 census Herbert was living with his married sister and brother in law Annie Sarah and Albert Sears at Silverdales Dinnington Worksop Nottinghamshire, Herbert is shown as being 20 yrs single and a coal miner. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 36 Carlingford Road, Hucknall and are shown as William 51 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Harriett 48 yrs and their children Maud Mary 28 yrs a hosiery hand, Henry 23 yrs a butchers assistant, Hetty 18 yrs a dress makers assistant and Edith 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Herbert Hodgkinson enlisted at Sheffield whilst residing at Rotherham, he served with the 9th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He landed in France on 29th December 1915 and was killed in action on the 1st day of the battle of the Somme 1st July 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
