William (junior) was born in 1898 in Nottingham and was the son of William (senior) and Fanny Janet Cooper née Wood of 22 Drake Street Colwick Street Nottingham. His father William (senior) was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Fanny Janet Wood was born in 1871 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1890 in Nottingham and went on to have 8 children sadly two of whom were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were : - Elizabeth b1890, Eliza b1893, Lucy b1896, William b1898, George b1901 and Sarah b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Woburn Street, Sneinton, Nottingham and are shown as William (snr) 41 yrs a hotel porter, he is living with his wife Fanny 40 yrs a lace hand and their children , Eliza 18 yrs a lace dresser, William (junr) 13 yrs a cobbing winder, George 10 yrs a scholar and Sarah 4 yrs.
Private William Cooper, enlisted at Nottingham (under age, he was only 13 yrs of age in the 1911 census). He served with “C” Company, 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he was wounded in action on 3rd September 1916 and died as a result on 11th September 1916, aged 18 yrs. He is buried in Couin British Cemetery.
In memoriam published 11th September 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “COOPER. – In loving memory of Private William Cooper, of Drake-street, wounded September 3rd, 1916, and died September 11th.
