Ernest was born in 1900 in Nottingham and was the son of Edward a hotel porter and Harriet Chaplin, living at 18 Tyler Street, Colwick Street, Nottingham. Both his mother Edward and his mother Harriett had been born in Bedworth Warwickshire his father in 1853 and his mother Harriett in 1863, they were married C1891 and went on to have 5 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, they were Edward b1896, Harry b1897, Ernest b1900, Hetty b1904 and Arthur b1909. In the 1911 census the family are living at 33 Pump Street, Nottingham, Edwards 58 yrs a hotel porter is living with his wife Harriett and their children , Edward 15 yrs a bottle washer at a brewery, Harry 13 yrs, Ernest 11 yrs, Hetty 7 yrs and Arthur 2 yrs

Military History

Private Ernest Chaplin enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st battalion Norfolk Regiment he died of wounds on 7th September 1918 and he is buried in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps

Two of his brothers served and died in the 'Great War' Private Edward Chaplin enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He died from wounds received in action at No 4 Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried in Mendingham Military Cemetery grave reference V E 30 Private Harry Chaplin 3rd battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment was to die of Diabetes on 24th May 1915 in Plymouth Military Hospital , he is buried in Plymouth
