Alfred Buxton was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of William an engine driver at a brick yard and Eliza Buxton née Elizabeth Amelia Saddington and the brother of William, Mary, Annie, Edward, Florence and Nellie Buxton. They lived at 37 Oldham Street Carlton Road Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1871 at Nottingham, his mother Eliza Amelia Saddington was born in 1873 at Nottingham, they were married on 28th January 1894 at St Pauls Chruch, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Oldham Street, Nottingham, William 40 yrs is an engine driver at a brick works, he is living with his wife Eliza 36 yrs and their 7 children including Alfred 16 yrs a brick makers labourer.
Rifleman Alfred Buxton, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 13th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 12th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
In memorial published 12th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“BUXTON. – In loving memory of Rifleman Alfred Buxton, Oldham-street, Carlton-road, killed in action July 12th, 1916. Loved by all. – From his loving mother, father, sisters, brother, brother Bill (in navy) and wife, sister Polly and husband (in France).”
