Albert was the son of John William and Sarah Elizabeth Brindley (née Barwell). John William Brindley was born in Derby in 1864. Sarah Elizabeth Barwell was born on 14 January 1867 (J/F/M Basford) in Colwick, Nottingham, the daughter of John and Mary (née Sills); she was baptised on 24 February 1867 at St John the Baptist, Colwick. John and Sarah were living at 16 Brewitt's Yard, Nottingham, when their first child, John, was baptised in 1886 but by 1889 when Samuel was baptised they were living at 21 Malt Mill Lane. They were still at the same address at the time of the 1891 Census: John (26) a smith's labourer, Sarah (24), John (6), Samuel (3) and James (2). They were still lving at 21 Malt Mill Lane when their first daughter, Violet, was born later that year. By 1894 when Leonard was baptised the family had moved to 21 Knotted Alley, Nottingham, and were still at the same address in 1901. John was now working as a labourer in the iron trade. He and Sarah now had seven children: John (16) and Samuel (13) who were both at work, James (12), Violet (9), Leonard (6), Albert (4) and Thomas (under 1 year). However, by 1911 the family was living at 300 Meadow Lane, Sneinton. John was working as a blacksmith. Seven of his nine children were still living at home: Samuel (24) a general labourer for Nottingham Corportion, Violet (19) a cigar maker, Leonard (16) an apprentice fitter to a hosiery machine builder, Albert(14) an errand boy at a plumber's shop, Thomas (10), Lily (7) and Florence (4). Two sons, John and James, were married and living independently. Leonard and Lily were the last members of the family to live at 300 Meadow Lane and this was still their home when Leonard died in 1966. Albert's father, John William, died on 6 May 1932 and his mother Sarah Elizabeth on 18 February 1941. Of Albert's siblings: John William married Minnie Nicholson (b. 2 December 1886) in 1908 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1911 they were living at 304 Meadow Lane; John (26) was a blacksmith striker. He and Minnie had a daughter, Minnie b. 8 April 1909 and later a son, John William b. 28 March 1913. John William died on 21 November 1918 at 15 Kirke White Cottages, Kirke White Street, Meadows. Minnie did not remarry and she and her two children were still living at the same address in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. Minnie died in 1966 (J/F/M Nottingham). Samuel Henry married Ethel Ellen Lamb in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham). He served in the Sherwood Foresters (265491 Private) and was in France from 28 February 1915; he was discharged on 13 March 1919. In 1939 he and his wife were living at 328 Meadow Lane; Samuel was a general labourer. He died in 1967 (A/M/J Nottingham). James married Annie Brockhouse in 1907 (J/F/M Nottingham). He served in the Sherwood Foresters (267438 Corporal) and was discharged on 11 February 1919 but continued to serve in the Territorials into the Second World War. James and Annie later lived at 3 Lichfield Road, Sneinton; he was employed by the Corporation Works & Ways Department. James died on 3 July 1948; his wife survived him. Violet married Thomas H Shaw in 1925 and died on 25 November 1930. Leonard attested in the Royal Naval Air Service on 12 February 1918 but transferred to the RAF on 1 April 1918 (249840 Fitter); He served in italy from 22 May 1918 until 8 November 1919. Leonard, an aero engine fitter, was living at 300 Meadow Lane with his widowed mother and unmarried sister Lily in 1939. He was still living at the same address at the time of his death on 29 March 1966. Thomas Benjamin attested in the RAF on 27 May 1918 at the age of 17; his postings included Lahore, India. He was discharged on 16 June 1922. He probably married Ivy Mayfield in 1924 (O/N/D Nottingham); they may have had three children: Dorothy J. b. 1926, Maurice b. 1928 and Lilian b. 1931. Thomas died in 1982 (O/N/D Nottingham). Lily Ellen was living at 300 Meadow Lane with her widowed mother and unmarried brother Leonard in 1939; she was employed as a hosiery machinist. Lily was living at 6 Mayfield Court, Meadows, when she died on 19 June 1979. Florence May probably married William Brown in 1930 (J/A/S Nottingham).
Albert was reported missing on 21 March 1918 but his death was not confirmed until July 1919. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
