Family History

Richard Wootton was born in 1879 at Ruddington, he was the son of John a frame work knitter and Hannah Wootton née Clarke of 25 Crwon Street, Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham. John was born in 1855 at Ruddington, Hannah Clarke was born in 1854 also at Ruddington, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 8 children 2 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their other children were Hannah Elizabeth b1877, Sarah b1880, Evelyn b1882, Eliza b1885, Thomas b1887, Estella b1890 and Florence Annie b1892. Richard married Beatrice Ann Tengus born 8th July 1884, they were married on 25th December 1909 at St Bartholomews Church, Nottingham, they lived at 7 Campbell Grove, Robin Hood Street, Nottingham and had a daughter Hilda Maud born 4th March 1917. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 23 C rown Street, Blue Bell Hill, John 56 yrs is a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Hannah 57 yrs and 3 of their children, Hannah Elizabeth 34 yrs a patten card maker, Stella 21 yrs a book folder and Annie 19 yrs a jennier. In the same 1911 census, Richard has got married and moved out of the family home, he is living at 262 St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham, he is shown as being 32 yrs and is a fish merchant, he is living with his wife Beatrice 27 yrs. Commencing 17th September 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Richard Wootton enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died at the Cannock Chase Military Hospital on 16th March 1917 of acute bronchitis. . He is buried in Ruddington (St. Peter) Churchyard Grave Reference: near S.W. corner of Church.
