William Hallam known as 'Bill' was the son of the late William a coal miner and Mary Hallam of 23 Hankin Street, Hucknall, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1859 at Tamworth Staffordshire, he died in 1900 aged 39 yrs, his mother Mary was born in 1865 at Polesworth, Warwickshire, they were marrried C1886 and went on to have the following children, George b1887, Joseph b1888, Mary b1892 ,Maria b1894 and Thomas b1900 In the 1911 census the family are living at 23 Hankin Street, Hucknall and are shown as Mary Hallam 46 yrs head of the family a widow she is living with her children Maria Elizabeth 17 yrs a cigar maker, William 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, and Edward 10 yrs of age a scholar, also living at the address is John Ward 21 yrs a coal miner stall man, and Mark Ward 16 yrs a coal miner loader, both are shown as boarders..
Rifleman Bill Hallam enlisted at Hucknall, he initially served with the service number 15854 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 27th August 1915, he was serving with the 21st battalion King'S Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 20th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
