Family History

William Mabbott Widnall was born in 1889 at Bingham and was the son of the late William a boot and shoe maker and repairer and Sarah Widnall née Robinson 43, Ewart Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham. His father William Widnall was born in 1859 at Bingham, he died in 1913 aged 54 yrs and his mother Sarah Robinson was born in 1855 also in Bingham, they were married in 1883 at Bingham and went on to have 4 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, his surviving sibling was Eliza born 1887 also at Bingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Union Street, Bingham and are shown as William 52 yrs a boot and shoe maker and repairer he is living with his wife Sarah 56 yrs and their son William 21 yrs a farm labourer.

Military History

Private William Mabbott Widnall enlisted on 10th August 1914 at Bingham, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 1 month and that his occupation was that of a shoemaker. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 24th May 1915, he is buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, grave reference D.56
