William Arthur Slater was born in 1887 in Nottingham and worked as a coal miner. He married Evelyn Slater, nee Haywood, in 1908. She was born in 1890 in Nottingham. They had two children Mary Ellen, born February 28, 1909 at Albion Place, Nottingham, Nottingham and William Arthur, born March 1911, also at Albion Place. By 1916 they were living at 46 Lees Yard, Canal Street, and after William Arthur's death his family moved to 17 Lucknow Street, Gedling Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.
Pte. Slater attested for service in July 1916 at Derby and was posted to 11th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. He embarked at Folkestone for France on 10/11/1916 arriving at Boulogne the same day. At the infantry base in Calais he was posted the 7th battalion. The battalion was in the line in the the Ypres Salient in November 1917. Though the main battle had stuttered to an end, shell and small arms fire continued to be exchanged and Pte Slater was killed in action on 12/11/1917. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
