Extra Information

In a letter published on 10th October 1918 in the Hucknall Dispatch William Elliott wrote of his distress following the death of his son, also William. “Dear Sir, – Will you please allow me space in your paper to write a few lines concerning Pte. William Elliott, as there is not much sympathy shown to the father. The young soldier had a father, and he is still alive in Hucknall. He maintained him till a short time ago, and found money for him while he was serving his country. I think it was unfair not to say anything about him in the letters last week, but the people of the town don’t know that he had one. Yet the son loved his father, and the father loved the son – which was shown by the frequent visits when on leave, and the letters he sent to his father, when away from home. He was the only son of George William Elliott, 87 George street, Hucknall, as well as of Martha Elliott, 55 Spring street, Hucknall. Gone but not forgotten. – In loving memory, from his father.” In memoriam notice published 10th April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELIOTT. – In loving memory of Billie, of 55, Spring-street, Hucknall, the only son of Martha Elliott, who was killed in action on April 10th, 1918, in his 18th year. – From his loving mother and sister Patsy. Until the day breaks.” Above are courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
