Family History

Edgar Cumberland Squires was born in 1879 at Ruddington, he was the son of the late Edward a frame work knitter and Eliza Squires née Cumberland, of Church Street, Ruddington,. Edward was born 1846 at Ruddington he died in 1908 aged 62 yrs, Eliza Cumberland was born in 1845 they were both born in Ruddington, they were married in 1864 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 12 children. Edgar married Mary Ann Tompkin (born 5th September 1882) in 1907 at Coventry, they lived at Court House, Gosford Street, Coventry they had the following children, Edgar Percival born 25th June 1908, Doris born 17th March 1910, Ada Mary born 21st May 1911 and Benjamin Thomas born 20th June 1913. In the 1911 census Edgar and his family are living at Court House, Gosford Street, Coventry, Edgar 30 yrs is a fitter in a motor factory, he is living with his wife Mary 28 yrs and their two children, Edgar 2 yrs and Doris 1 year of age. Commencing 22nd April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 31 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military History

Sergeant Edgar Cumberland Squires enlisted at Coventry, he served with the 1st battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 4th October 1917 and is buried atPoelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium Grave Reference: XLV A 12

His brother Harry Squires served as Sapper 121985 in the Royal Engineers, he landed in France on 6th October 1915, he was killed in action on 30th March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. France. further research and information Peter Gillings
