Military History

Enlisted at Nottingham and entered theatre sometime after 1 January 1916. He was posted to 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. Henry was killed during the Battle of Messines - June 9th 1917 - '12.10 am rations arrived and sent up. Intermittent and pretty heavy shelling of 'O' (Odour Trench) 21 central with 5.9's which continued throughout the night. Capt. Gregory reported killed while in Forester Post. 2/Lt. Cook killed in Odour Trench about the same time.' It is probable that Henry was also killed at this time as 2 officers and 9 other ranks were killed in the day. A shell strike is the likely cause of all the deaths. They are all commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. John Morse
