Joseph John was born in 1876 (birth registered Oct/Nov/Dec) the son of Joseph John Old, a bricklayer and builder, and Kate Emily Old. His father gave the information on the 1911 census that he and his wife had been married for 36 years and of their ten children born living only nine were still alive. The following children were named on the census returns 1881, 1891 and 1911: Joseph, William, George, Florence, Sarah, Kate, Ethel and Ernest. In 1881 they were living at 26 Selden Place, Sneinton, Nottingham, and had three children; Joseph John (4), William J. (2) and George (9 months). Ten years later they were at 105 Sneinton Road with five children, Joseph, William, Sarah (6), Kate (3) and Ethel (9 months). By 1911 the family was living at 21 Trent Lane, Nottingham, when only Sarah, Kate, Ethel and Ernest (13) were at home. Joseph junior married Elizabeth (b. about 1876) in 1898 and at the time of the 1901 census they were living at 1 Belmont Square, Sneinton; they had one daughter, Violet (1). By 1911 they had moved to 50 Sycamore Road, Nottingham, and had five children; Violet, Doris (10), George (8), Kitty (6) and John (3). His widow, Elizabeth, died in 1928. Joseph's mother died in 1940 age 87 and his father in 1944 aged 92 (administration to his married daughter, Kate Wright).
Previously 268693 7th Notts and Derbys and 268693 2/7th Notts and Derbys. He was killed in action and his death presumed 31 March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial (Panel 42 and 43). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
