William Edward Champan married his wife Clarinda Mitchell (born 10th July 1885 ) in Mansfield in 1914 they had a child before wedlock Florence Elizabeth born 23rd July 1913 In the 1911 census they lived at 49 Whyburn Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as William 25 yrs a coal miner loader , he is living with his wife Clarinda 24 yrs, they state they have been married under 1 year ? (they were living as common law man and wife as their marriage was on 28th September 1914.) His pension card shows his wife was living at 3 Highfield Yard, Spondon Street Sherwood, and states their child Florence Elizabeth was born before wedlock, it goes on to state the guardian of Florence Elizabeth was Mrs B (Betty) Mitchell of 60 Whyburn Street, Butlers Hill, Hucknall. (grandmother of William Chapman. In his army service record , the next of kin form (w5080) for the soldier was completed by Betty Mitchell of 60 Whyburn Street, Hucknall on which she states she is the grandmother of the soldier. She states his parents are deceased and that his only other living relative is a married sister Kate Cooper with an address in Bulwell and gives details of his wife and child. His army service record also gives the date of his marriage to Clarinda Mitchell as 25th September 1914, at the Mansfield Register office, it gives his wife address as 1 James yard, Church Street, Mansfield.
Private William Edward Chapman enlisted on 2nd September 1914 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 30 yrs and 301 days, he stated he was a labourer and had previous services in the Army , he had served for 12 yrs in the 1st battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and left having time served. He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment and landed in France on 11th December 1914. On the 10th November 1915 he embarked from Marsailles, France disembarking at Alexandria on 17th November 1915. He embarked from Port Said on 23rd November 1915 disembarking at Basra on 8th December 1915. He was killed in action on 6th April 1916 in Mesopotamia having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Basra memorial panel 12.
Note although Betsy Mitchell's relationship with William Edward Chapman is that of grandmother see form W5080 in his army service record it is suspected that she is in fact his mother in law and grandmother of his and her daughters child Florecne Elizabeth.
