Family History

Joseph Henry was born in 1892 in Daybrook and was the son of George Girsham a railway wagon maker and Sarah Ann Caunt née Whaley of 8 Montague Road Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire.. His father George Girsham was born in 1865 in Long Bennington, Lincolnshire and his mother Sarah Ann Whaley was born in in 1864 in Hough on the Hill, Lincolnshire , they were married in 1883 , their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration area, they went on to have 6 children sadly one died in infancy , the children recorded on the 1891-1911 census are : George E b 1888 Bulwell, Florence May b1890 Daybrook, Joseph Henry b1892 Daybrook and Christopher Marston Caunt b1896 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Montague Road, Hucknall and are shown as George Gersham Caunt 46 yrs a railway wagon maker, head of the family, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 47 yrs Florence Mary 21 yrs , mothers helper, Joseph Henry 18 yrs a colliery horse driver below ground, Christopher Marston 15 yrs a colliery horse driver below ground also living with them is George William Caunt 1 yr, their grandson and James Caunt 41 yrs a blacksmith he is listed as a boarder. Joseph Henry married his wife Elsie A Bryan in 1915, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area.

Military History

Lance Corporal Joseph Henry Caunt enlisted in Hucknall and served with the 13th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 25th April 1917, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial.
