Harold Bicknell was born 1893 at Nottingham and was the son of George a bricklayers labourer and his first wife Sarah Bicknell née Tarrant. His father George was born in 1857 at Nottingham and his mother Sarah Tarrant was born in 1859 , they were married in 1875 at Radford, they went on to have the following children, Mary b1876, Alice b1881, George b1883, James b1885, Edward b1887, Leonard b1890, Harold b1893 and William b1895. His mother Sarah was to die in 1895 at Nottingham she was 35 yrs of age. His father re married Elizabeth Richardson in 1898 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Bernard Terrace, Simpkin Street, Nottingham, they are shown as George 54 years a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his (second) wife Elizabeth 52 yrs and his two sons Harold 18 yrs a confectioners carter and William 15 years a dairyman
Rifleman Harold Bicknell, enlisted on 10th September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 197 days, he was a town carter. He served with the 13th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 29th October 1914. he died of wounds at No. 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen on 19th November 1916. He had been wounded, a gun shot wound to the head on 15th November 1916 whilst in the line at Talus Bois, near Montauban, France, during the Battle of the Somme.. He was buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension
His bother Private William Bicknell, served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. In memoriam published 19th November 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BICKNELL. – In loving memory of our dear brother Harold, 13th K.R.R., who died of wounds November 19th, 1916, at Rouen.
