Family History

His birth surname was Hobart his father being Thomas Gibson Hobart of Adelaide South Australia. His mother was Alice (née Cressey). In 1900 she married Charles Clifford (1876-1932) and Sydney adopted his surname. In 1901 they were living at 10 Duncombe Street St Ann's Well Road Nottingham. He was the brother of Herbert, Frank, Edward, Charles, John, May, Elsie and Alice Clifford. At the time of his death he was living at 16 Glasshouse Street, Nottingham

Military History

He attested 22/6/1909 aged 17 years 2 months joining the regular army 30/12/1909. He transferred to South Staffordshire Regiment(8718) 1/1/1910. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and he served with 8th Division Army Cyclist Corps. He was killed in action on 14th March 1915 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery (grave ref. III. D. 15).
