He was the husband of Eliza Gough and the father of Lilian Elizabeth, Gladys May and William Edward Gough. In 1911 they lived at 37 Ladysmith Road and later 29 Kingsley Road (both Sneinton Nottingham).
Gough enlisted 7/4/1915 at Bristol standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 13 Stone. He embarked 27/9/1916 at Southampton aboard SS Victoria and was posted 30/9/1916 to No 2 Base Remounts Depot. He was compulsorily transferred 1/3/1917 to the Royal Engineers as platelayer very superior, with rank of Sapper to 109th Railway Company (New No. WR 276306).He went on leave between 27/10/1917 to 6/11/1917. He was admitted to Hospital 21/5/1918 to 10/6/1918 returning to his unit 31/7/1918.On 25/8/1 (Label No.38287.) He was posted 25/8/1818 From109th to R.C.T.D. Royal Engineers Longmoor (R.E. Railways Depot) before demobilisation. He received a disability pension for anaemia 22/5/1919.
