James William Whiles was born in 1897 at Lord Nelson Street, Sneinton, he was the son of James a house painter and decorator and Sarah Elizabeth Whiles née Powell and the brother of Alan, Arthur and Margaret Mary Whiles.
His father James was born in 1872 at Madras, India, his mother Sarah Elizabeth Powell was born in 1872 at Nottingham, they were married on 22nd October 1892 at St Savious Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 13 Sneinton Boulevard Nottingham, James 39 yrs is a house painter and decorator, he is living with his wife Sarah Elizabeth 39 yrs and their children, James William 14 yrs, Alan 7 yrs, Arthur 8 years and Margaret Mary 4 yrs of age.
Lance Corporal James William Whiles enlisted on 1st September 1913 at Nottingham, giving his address as 13 Sneinton Boulevard, Nottingham, his age was 17 yrs and 7 months he was a painter, he was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 28th February 1915, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 18th August 1915 He was killed in action on 23rd August 1918, he is buried at Cabaret - Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France
