Family history

Joseph Wakefield was born in 1886 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late James Wakefield a packing case maker and the late Emma Wakefield née Dykes of 48 Edwn Strret, Nottingham

His father James was born in 1848 at Nottingham, he died in 1905 aged 57 yrs, his mother Emma Dykes was born in 1849 at Nottingham, she died in 1916 aged 67 yrs, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his widowed mother Emma 62 yrs is living at 48 Edwin Street, Nottingham, she is living with her children,Albert 19 yrs a labourer and Ernest 19 yrs a painter.

Joseph was the husband of Mabel Miller (born 14th March 1887) they were married on 10th June 1905 at St Emmanuel Church, Nottingham, and the father of Frederick James Wakefield born 9th August 1909 and Ellen born 5th June 1915.

They lived at 26 Tyler Street Glasshouse Street Nottingham in the 1911 census , Joseph 25 yrs is a coal carter, he is living with his wife Mabel 24 yrs a lace clipper and their son Frederick James 1 year old.

Mabel Wakefield later lived at 4 Mount Square, Mount Street, Nottingham. (C.W.G.C)

Commencing 5th May 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private Joseph Wakefield enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 24th October 1915 at no 10 casualty clearing station, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
