William Taylor was born in 1890 at Nottingham, he was the son of Francis Joseph (Frank) a licensed victualler the landlord of the “Royal Oak,” 226 Carlton Road, Nottingham and the late Kate Taylor née Smith,
His father Francis Joseph was born in 1864 at Nottingham, his mother Kate Smith was born in 1869 at Nottingham, she died in 1906 aged 41 yrs, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham and went on to have 4 children, Sarah b1887, Mabel b1889, William b1890 and Florence b1891.
Following the death of his mother his father re married to Lizzie Smith in 1908 at Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family are living at The Royal Oak , Carlton Road, Nottingham, Frank 47 yrs a licensed victualler is living with his second wife Lizzie 42 yrs and his children, Mable 22 yrs no occupation, Polly 9 yrs, Edwin Smith (step son) 18 yrs an assistant draper,
Private William Taylor, enlisted in Doncaster , whilst residing at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 20464 with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he later transferred to the 9th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 and is buried in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux.
In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 25th April 1918 :-
“TAYLOR. – Killed in action, April 23rd, 1917, Private W. Taylor, Royal Scots, Royal Oak, Carlton-road, aged 27. In the bloom of life death claimed him, in the pride of his manhood days; none knew him but to love him, none mentioned his name but with praise. – From his loving father, mam, and sister Polly.
“TAYLOR. – In affectionate remembrance of our dear brother, William Taylor, late Royal Oak, Carlton-road, killed in action April 23rd, 1917. Cherished memories. – Sisters
