William Smith was born in 1883 at Alfreton, Derbyshire and was the son of William and Annie Alvey Smith. He married Margaret Dennis (born 15th August 1880) on 2nd March 1907 at St Lukes Church, Derby they lived at 20 Thoresby Avenue Colwick Road Nottingham. William Smith pension card shows he was married to Margaret who following his death was awarded a pension pf 23 shillings and sixpence - with effect from 28th September 1915 in relation to her and her children, Gladys Mary born 21st March 1904, John William born 16th February 1905 and Stephen born 13th August 1906, it stays all were born before wedlock. Commencing 28th September 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Lance Sergeant William Smith, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards, he died at Chelsea Barracks from angina pectoris on 14th February 1915. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery.
