Albert Sherwin

Albert was the son of William Sherwin and his wife Elizabeth nee Ball. William was born in Derby and Elizabeth in Radford, Nottingham. They were married in 1877 (A/M/J Nottingham) and according to information given by the widowed Elizabeth on the 1911 Census they had had twelve children of whom only nine were still living. Eleven children, all born in Sneinton, were named on the census between 1881 and 1911 one of whom, George, is known to have died in infancy: Frank b. abt 1874, Clara b. 1878 (J/A/S Nottingham), Mary Ann b. 1880 (O/N/D Nottingham), William prob. b. 1882 (O/N/D Nottingham), Sarah Ann b. 1885 (O/N/D Nottingham), Henry prob. b. 1887 (O/N/D Nottingham, Emma Elizabeth birth registered 1890 (J/F/M Nottingham), George b. 1892 (A/M/J Nottingham) d. 1892 (A/M/J Nottingham), Lily b. 1893 (A/M/J Nottingham), Albert b. 1896 (A/M/J Nottingham) and Florence (Florrie) b. 1899 (A/M/J Nottingham). Albert's date of birth is given on the RND record as 18 May 1897 but his birth was registered in 1896 (mother's maiden name Ball). In 1881 William and Elizabeth, who were both working as cordwainers [archaic, shoemaker], were living at 13 Water Street, Nottingham, with their three children Frank (7), Clara (2) and Mary (under 1 year). Also in the household was a lodger, Clara Bell (16) a cotton doubler. The family had moved to 2 Water Street by 1891 and William was a shoe maker. Seven children were in the home on the night of the census: Frank (18) a labourer, Clara (13), Mary (11), William (9), Sarah (6), Henry (3) and Emma (1). Another son, George, was born the following year and died in the same registration period (1892 A/M/J). By 1901 William and Elizabeth were living at 17 Pollock Street, Nottingham; William was a boot and shoe repairer. Eight children were recorded with their parents on the night of the census: Clara (22) a lace mender, William (18) a coal hewer, Sarah (15) a cigar maker, Henry (13), Emma (11), Lily (7), Albert (4) and Florence (2). William snr. died in 1903 or 1904 (death registered J/F/M Nottingham) aged 54. In 1911 his widow Elizabeth, a lace hand, was living at 46 Pierrepont Street, Nottingham, with her children Sarah (25) a lace hand, Emma (21) and Lily (18) who were machinists, Albert (14) who was at a plating works and Florence (12) who was still at school. Albert named his mother as his next of kin when he enlisted in 1915. Her address was given first as 17 Regent Street, Sneinton, and later as 2 Bean's Yard, Manvers Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, which is also the address given on the later CWGC record. Elizabeth probably died in 1936 (O/N/D Nottingham).
