Family History

He was the son of William and Priscilla Fenton and the brother of William Albert and Daisy Fenton. In 1901 they lived at 57 Pierrepoint Street and in 1911 at 16 Milk Street. William and Priscilla later moved to 23 Lewes Street (all Nottingham).

Military History

He enlisted at Nottingham 15/10/1913 in the Notts & Derby Special reserve. He was mobilised 15?12/1914 but was listed as AWOL and got 42 days detention. On 23 March 1915 he received 14 days Field Punishment No 2 and finally on 2 July 1915 he received 28 days detention. On 13/9/1915 he was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters at Gallipoli. He seems to have settled in to army life once with the battalion. On 21 September 1916 the battalion were in Constance trench and the enemy knew an advance was being prepared. It therefore received a large amount of shelling and the battalion lost men on a regular basis. The war diary for Thursday 21st, cited 3 other ranks killed and 15 wounded. John was killed in action during this period and his body buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery. His next of kin listed as - Father William Albert, Mother Priscilla of 23 Lewes Street Nottingham. Brother William Albert of 14 Sanderson Street Nottingham.
