Family History

Charles Thomas Newcombe was born in 1894, he was baptised on 18th November 1894 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, he was the son of Thomas a porter and Emma Newcombe née Fairholm of 31 Pyatt Street, Nottingham. His father Thomas married his mother Emma Fairholm (born 1870 at Nottingham) in 1887 at Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Minerva Alley, Court Street, Barker Gate, Nottingham, His mother Emma 41 yrs is a lace dyer, she is shown as being married she is living with her children, John 23 yrs a coal miner, Thomas 17 yrs a lace dyer and John Joseph 4 yrs of age, (his father Thomas not at the address and cannot be found anywhere else on the census.)

Military History

Private Charles Thomas Newcombe enlisted at Nottingham on 17th October 1913, he was a town labourer, whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 8th September 1914 at he died of his wounds on 19th October 1914 Steenwerck and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery, France.
