Thomas George was born in 1891 in Nottingham and was the son of Thomas George (senior) a wood sawyer and Elizabeth Needham née Radford they lived at 30 Woodhouse Street Carlton Road Nottingham. His father Thomas George (senior) was born in 1863 in Nottingham, his mother was born in 1868 in Somercoates, Derbyshire, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham and went on to have a large family of 13 children, sadly however 4 of their children died in infancy or childhood. Their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were : - Jane Elizabeth b1888, Annie b1890, George Thomas b1891, Mabel Alice b1894, Rose Hannah b1896, Sarah Ann b1897, Emma Louisa b1898, Ernest Frederick b1902 and John William Needham b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Woodhouse Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas George 48 yrs head of the family a wood sawyer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Jane Elizabeth 23 yrs a point seamer, Annie 20 yrs a cop winder, Thomas George 19 yrs a wood sawyer, Mabel Alice 17 yrs, Rose Hannah 15 yrs a lace joiner, Sarah Ann 14 yrs an errand girl, Emma Louise 13 yrs an errand girl , Ernest Frederick 9yrs a scholar and John William 5 yrs a scholar. Thomas was engaged to Clara at the time of his death.
Lance Corporal Thomas George Needham, enlisted in Nottingham on 9th September 1914, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 355 days and his occupation as that of a sawyer. On 11th September he arrived at Winchester Barracks. He was posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps on 17th September 1914. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 27th October 1914. He landed in France and joined the British Expeditionary Force on 23rd July 1915 and was serving with the 12th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps when he was killed in action on 6th March 1916 He is buried in Essex Farm Cemetery.

Needham, who was killed in action March 4th, 1916. Sleep on dear brother and take thy rest, they miss you most who loved you best. – Jennie Needham. “NEEDHAM. – In loving memory of Corporal T. G. Needham, killed in action March 4th, 1916, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Needham, 30, Woodhouse-street. Christ shall link the broken chain, closer till we meet again. – Father, mother, sisters, and brothers. “NEEDHAM. – In loving memory of Corporal T. G. Needham, killed in action March 4th, 1916. I miss him and mourn him in silence unseen, and think of the happiness that might have been. – Clara. “NEEDHAM. – In loving memory of Corporal T. G. Needham, killed in action March 4th, 1916.
