Frank Hartshorn was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a vanman and his first wife the late Catherine Hartshorn née Parker and the brother of James, Clara and Mary Hartshorn. 17 Bennetts Terrace, Sneinton, Nottingham.
His father William was born in 1865 at Nottingham, his mother Catherine Parker was born in 1869 at Nottingham, sh died in 1913 at Nottingham aged 45 yrs, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham,they had 5 children
In the 1911 census the family lived at 4 Sun Hill Sneinton, Nottingham. William 46 yrs is a van man, he is living with his wfie Catherine 42 yrs and their children, Frank 16 yrs a laboureres porter, James 11 yrs Clara 6 yrs, Mary years of age.
27757 Private Frank Hartshorn enlisted in the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Welbeck Rangers) (Notts and Derby Regiment) in June or July 1915. The battalion was raised by the Mayor and recruiting committee on 1 June 1915 and went to France on 6 March 1916. At some point Frank was posted to the 1st battalion. The battalion were engaged in the 3rd Battles of Ypres and it first battle on 31 July 1917, Battle of Pilckem. The battalion attacked through Hooge and fought successfully to the Westhoek Ridge, despite heavy counter attacks by the enemy and desperate fighting, the ridge was held. Frank was one of some 80 men killed or dying of wounds between 31 July and 6 August. Frank was moved down the medical chain to the large Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek and died there on 6 August, being buried in the adjacent cemetery.

27757 Private Frank Hartshorn 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) died of wounds in a Casualty Clearing Station at Lijssenthoek and was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, grave XVII.B.16.
