Family history

George Hancock was born in 1892 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Hancock a coal miner and Mary Jane Hancock née Burton of 55 Wallis SDTreet, Old Basford, Nottingham.

His father Walter was born in 1861 Eastington, Derbyshire, his mother Mary Jane Burton was born in 1861 at Walsall, they were married in 1891 at Lenton Priory Church, Nottingham, they had 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 55 Willis Street, Old Basford, Walter 50 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 50 yrs and 4 of their children including George 19 yrs a coal miner.

George was the husband of Alice Lacey (born 6th March 1888) they were marrried on 16th December 1909 at Nottingham register office, they lived at 5 Keswick Street, Sneinton, they had 2 children, Mabel born 16 th October 1913 and George born 16th December 1914

In the 1911 census they lived at 32 Sneinton Road Nottingham.George 19 yrs is a railway porter he is living with this wife Alice 23 yrs of age.

Commencing 22nd January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

His widow later remarried Samuel Furr.

Military history

Private George Hancock enlisted at Nottingham on 12th June 1915, giving his address as 20 Keswick Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, giving his age as 25 yrs and 11 months he was a railway porter, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Landing in France on 6th March 1916 he died of wounds on 16th July 1916, he is buried at Chocques Military Cemetery, France
