Frank Gosling

Frank was the son of Charles and Kate Violet Gosling (née Welsh). His father Charles was born in Basford on 18 March 1874, the son of Charles and Ellen Gosling. His mother Kate Violet Welsh was born in Nottingham on 21 September 1877, the daughter of Frank and Hannah Welsh. Charles and Kate were married in 1896 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Frank was their first child, born in 1896 (J/A/S Nottingham). Charles and Violet had at least seven more children: Elsie Violet b. 1898 and Annie Elizabeth b. 1902 who were both born in Nottingham and Charles Arthur b. 1908 (d. 1912 J/A/S Sheffield), Richard Quinton b. 1911, Dorothy M. b. 1914, Margaret b. 26 January 1916 and Kate E. b. 28 July 1918 who were all born in Sheffield. It is unlikely that Frank lived with his parents for any length of time as in 1901 when his parents were living in the Meadows, Nottingham, he was living with his paternal grandparents, Charles and Ellen Gosling at 31 Manor Street, Sneinton. His grandfather was a coal miner and his grandmother an overlooker of hosiery menders. Frank's sister, Elsie Violet (2), was living with her maternal grandparents, Frank and Hannah Welsh, on Alfred Street South, Nottingham. Frank was still living with his grandparents in 1911, by which time they had moved to 35 Colwick Road, Sneinton. Frank was a grocer's errand boy. However, his parents had moved to Sheffield by 1911 where his father was an iron founder/moulder, a trade he had followed since leaving school. Charles and his wife had three other children; Elsie (12), Annie (9) and Charles (2) who died the following year. They had four more children while they were living in Sheffield; Richard, Dorothy, Margaret and Kate. Frank's grandfather Charles Gosling died in September 1923 (burial 12 September) and his grandmother Ellen in November 1926 (burial 10 November). His parents had returned to Nottingham by 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled and were living at Charles' parents former home at 35 Colwick Road, Sneinton. Charles was still working as an ironmoulder. Also in the household were their daughters Margaret, a lace junior, and Kate, a stationery packer; the record of another member of the household remains closed. Charles died on 20 August 1941; the probate record gave his address as 35 Colwick Road. His wife Kate died in 1951 (J/F/M Nottingham).
