Fred Glover

Fred Glover was killed in the Battle of Thiepval 26/29th September 1916 in the battalion's successful attacks. Fred enlisted in the Special Reserve in 1913 aged 18 years and 310 days. He was mobilized on 7 August 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion in France on 11 November 1914. On 15 May 1915 he was hospitalised with a shrapnel wound and sent to England. 'On May 15th Major Dove was shot through the head going round the trenches - a great loss to his comrades of all ranks - and two other officers (Lieutenants Gamble and Selby) and 20 men were this day wounded' (2nd battalion war diary). On 18 September 1915 he joined 9th Battalion on Gallipoli. Reinforcements arrived on 14th September and Fred was probably with this group. Fred, like many of the battalion has no known grave. Killed in action September 26th 1916, Private Fred Glover, oldest son of Alfred and Anne Glover of 4 Shaftesbury Street, Alfred Street South, age 23.'
