Ralph Fisher was born in 1897 at Nottingham the son of Reuben Paul a joiner and Sarah Fisher (née Brooks). His father was born in 1866 at Ridings, Derbyshire, his mother in 1864 at Horninghold, Leicestershire. Married on 4th July 1887 in Church Langton, Leicestershire, they had twelve children one dying in infancy. Ralph’ surviving siblings , all except Lilly born at Nottingham, were Eveline b.1888, Ethel b.1889, Reginald b.1891, Alfred b.1892, Lilly b.1894 (Derby), Hilda b.1895 Reuben b.1898, Stanley b.1901, Gladys b.1902 and Ivy Millicent b.1906. In 1911 they lived at 11 Tadema Street Randolph Street Carlton Road Nottingham. Reuben was a joiner, Eveline a braider, Ethel a machinist, Alfred a joiner, Lilly a net worker, Hilda a pattern maker whilst the younger children were at school or at home.
Ralph Fisher enlisted at Nottingham initially serving (49677) with the Royal Garrison artillery. He landed in France on 12th October 1915 and died of wounds on 26th November 1917. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Grave Reference: XXVI A 14 A
His brother Gunner Reuben Fisher, served with “A” Battery, 296th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 25th March 1918. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Death notice published 15th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “FISHER. – Killed in action, March 25th, 1918, Gunner Reuben Fisher, R.F.A., aged 20, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Fisher, 11, Tadema-street, brother of Ralph, died of wounds November 25th, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. – From sorrowing father, mother, sisters, brothers, and Nellie.” In memoriam published 26th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “FISHER.-- In ever-loving memory of Pte. Ralph Fisher, 11, Tadema-street, died of wounds in France November 26th, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. Father, mother, brothers and sisters. “FISHER. - In loving memory of our dear brother, Private Ralph Fisher, Scottish Rifles, died of wounds in France November 26th, 1917.
