George Finch was born on 21st August 1886 at Nottingham he was the son of Mary Ann Finch born 1849 at Nottingham and the stepson of John Bowler born 1838 at Mansfield who were married on 4th April 1896 he had a brother George born 1886 atNottingham.

He was the husband of Maria Barber (born 13th January 1890 Lincolnshire) they were married on 25th December 1909 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, and the father of George Henry born 11th July 1910 , John born 1913 died 1914 and Jane Finch born 21st February 1915.

In the 1911 census they lived at 6 Beaumont Street Sneinton Nottingham George 25 yrs is a cotton spinner, he is living with his wife Maria 21 yrs a cotton winder.

Military history

Private George Finch enisted on 6th September 1914 giving his address as 6 Beaumont Street, Sneinton, he had previously served for 4 years wit the Robin Hood battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 28th February 1915. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row L. Grave 54.
