Military History

John William Booth went to France with 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters on 4 November 1914. It is likely that he was a special reservist who attested in April 1912. He was in 'C' Company and at some point 'mentioned in dispatches' He was killed in action during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle - 10 to 13th March 1915. On 12th the enemy attacked in overwhelming numbers forcing the battalion back to the support trench. With a Victoria Cross winning action by Private Jacob Rivers and counter attacks by the men the enemy attack was thrown back and after two hours of close quarter fighting, the battalion regained the lost ground. It had though been at great cost. John Morse
