Edward John was born in 1896 in Nottingham and was the son of William a lace curtain dresser and and Catherine Astill née Green, of 27 Cobham Street, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Catherine Green was born in 1872 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1892 in Nottingham and went on to have 5 children 1 of whom died in infancy their surviving 4 children were Edward John b1896, George William b1905, William Arthur b1907 and Christopher b1909, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 cneus the family are living at 27 Coldham Street Nottingham and are shown as William 41 yrs a lace curtain dresser, he is living with his wife Catherine 39 yrs a lace hand and their children Edward John 15 yrs a bicycle maker, George William 6 yrs, William Arthur 4 yrs and Christopher 2 yrs, also living with them is their widowed mother Mary Ann Astill 67 yrs
Private Edward Astill, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in the Balkans on 10th July 1915, he died of wounds on 4th January 1917. The Gallipoli veteran is buried in Mesnil Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France
In memoriam published 4th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ASTILL. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Edward Astill, Northumberland Fusiliers, killed in action January 4th, 1917, in his 21st year. 'Tis just one year ago to-day since our dear son was called away.
