William was born in 1886 in Nottingham and was the son of John a tailor and Mary Attaway of 1 Carrisbrook Terrace, Nottingham. He was the husband of Beatrice (née Widdowson) Attaway whom he had married in 1906 in Nottingham and the father of Elsie May and Arthur Attaway. In 1911 they lived at 19 Mafeking Street Sneinton Nottingham.
Private William Attaway, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, previously 2nd Battalion, he landed in France as a reinforcement to 2nd Battalion on 18th August 1915. He was was killed in action on 19th August 1917. He is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery.
In memoriam published 19th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ATTAWAY. – In loving and sad memory of my dear son, Lance-Cpl. William Attaway, late of 457, Berridge-road, Hyson Green, killed in action on August 19th, 1917. He was one of the best, and a loving father.
