Family History

Stephen Allen was born in 1886 at Hucknall and was the son of William Allen a coal miner hewer and his first wife the late Lydia Hathersmith. His father William was born in 1865 at Long Clawson Leicestershire, his mother Lydia Hathersmith was born in 1866, Bloxwich, Staffordshire she died in 1888 aged 22 yrs. His father re married in 1890 to Elizabeth Carlisle born 1865 Kimberley, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, she died in 1909 aged 42 yrs , they had the following children, Wiliam Henry b 1890, Ernest b1892, Mabel b1899, Lily b1902 and Elsie b1905. Stephen Allen married his wife Mary Ellen Butcher (born 16th July 1886) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 3 Lisson Road, Bulwell and had a daughter Lilly Allen born 24th March 1909. In the 1911 census he is livng at 63 George Stret, Hucknall and is shown as Stepehn Allen 25 yrs a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 24 yrs and their daughter Lilly 2 yrs of age. Following his death his widow Mary Ellen was awarded a pension of 19 shillings and 9 pence a week commencing on 2nd April 1917. His widow re married on 6th October 1917 to John Harris and lived at 7 Lisson Yard Hucknall Lane Bulwell

Military History

Private Stephen Allen enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards and was killed in action on 16th September 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
