Father: Thomas Cumberpatch, born 1865 at Northampton and working as a bricklayer's labourer. Mother: Emily Cumberbatch, born in 1869 in Nottingham and working as a lace clipper. Brothers:Thomas, born in 1894 and working as a bolt maker,Uriah, born in 1897 and working as a dray boy for carters and John, born in 1901. Sisters:Sarah E. born in 1892 and employed as a lace worker, Ruth, born in 1905 and Irene, born in April 1910. All the children were born in Nottingham. In 1901 both Emily and Arthur Edward Cumberbatch, aged 15 months, were place in the Beech Avenue Workhouse and Infirmary, but by 1911 the family had set up home at 2 Walker Place, Walker Street, Nottingham before moving to 49 Walker Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham.
Pte. Cumberbatch was called up for service with the Leicestershire Regiment, No. 15930 and following training he was drafted to France. He was transferred to 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. During the Battle of the Selle in October 1918 the 8th Battalion dug in at a village and orchards just north of Ghissignies. Pte. Cumberbatch was killed in action when the area was heavily shelled on the battalion's first day in the front line. He was buried at Bearing British Cemetery (B.1)
In memoriam published 28th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post:- “CUMBERPATCH. – In loving memory of Pte. Arthur Cumberpatch, 8th Lincolns, killed in action October 28th, 1918, aged 19.
