Harry Fitzwalter Read was born in 1882 at Nottingham and was the son of Walter Richard Read (1862-1923) a joiner and Annie Gazey (1861-1937) Harry married Mary Ann Leadbetter (born 4th March 1882 at Derby) on 3rd October 1903 at Lenton, Nottingham, they lived at 9 Auckland Street, Radford, Nottingham, they had the following children, Kenneth George born 16th February 1904, Elizabeth Rowbottom born 5th July 1907, Lillian Sarah born 25th February 1911, Florence Amy born 9th September 1912 and Gladys born 15th September 1913. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Lincoln Street, they are shown as Henry Fitzwalter Read 27 yrs a carriage hand, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 29 yrs and their children, Kenneth George 7 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth Rowbottom 3 yrs and Lillian Sarah 1 month old. Mary Ann later lived at 43 Ossington Street Radford. Following his death his widow Mary Ann was awarded a pension of 31 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 6th May 1918.
Private Harry Fitzwalter Read enlisted at Nottingham on 14th November 1914, he was 31 yrs and 10 months old, he was living at 9 Auckland Street, Radford, his next of kin was his wife Mary Ann of the same address , he initially served with the service number 39198 in the Army Service Corps, He landed in France on 25th January 1916 however he was returned to England on 14th July 1916 for discharge, he was discharged from the army on 25th July 1916, his services being no longer required Kings Regulation 392. He was later conscripted and he died of wounds on 25th October 1917 whilst serving with the 18th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and is buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport
