Herbert William Harold Wakefield was born in 1889 at Nottingham and was the son of George William and the late Kate Margaret Wakefield née Dallison of 25 Osborne Street Radford Nottingham. His father George William was born in 1870 at Eastwood and his mother Kate Margaret Dallison was born in 1868 at Lenton, they were married in 1886 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children all born in Nottingham, Mary Ellen b1887, Herbert William Harold b1889, Claude Bailey b1890, Charles Archibald b1892 and Eric Arthur b1906. His mother died in 1909 at Nottingham she was 42 yrs of age. In the 1911 census his father is living at 6 Croydon Road, Radford he is shown as being 42 yrs of age , a widow and an assurance agent, he is living with Henry Wiliam Thompson and family. In the same 1911 census the rest of the family are living at 55 Welbeck Street, Nottingham, head of the household is his sister Mary Ellen 24 yrs a housekeeper, she is living with her siblings Harold 21 yrs a bookbinder, Claude 20 yrs a milkman, Charles 18 yrs a compositor and Eric 5 yrs.
Private Herbert William Harold Wakefield enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, he was killed in action on 14th May 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
His date of death was 14th May 1917, as is shown in the Soldiers died in the Great War and soldiers effects and family notices, only the cwgc shows 4th May. In memoriam published 14th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WAKEFIELD. – In loving remembrance of Harold Wakefield, killed May 14th, 1917. At rest. – From sister and brothers. “WAKEFIELD. – In loving memory of my dear brother, Pte. Harold Wakefieldt, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I come. – Claude and Lizzie. “WAKEFIELD. – In loving remembrance of Pte. Harold Wakefield, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Cherished memories of one I loved so dear. – Florrie.” In memoriam published 14th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WAKEFIELD. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. Harold Wakefield, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Ever in our thoughts. – Claude and Lizzie. “WAKEFIELD. – In loving memory of Pte. Harold Wakefield, Duke of Wellingtons, killed in action May 14th, 1917. Life's sweetest gift is remembrance.
