Albert Varnham was born in 1896 he was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Varnam née Dovey of 48 Sherwood Rise, Nuncargate. William was born in 1865 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Elizabeth Dovey was born in 1867 at Nuncargate, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 8 children. In 1911 the family were living at 48 Sherwood Rise, Nuncargate, William 46 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and their 8 children including Albert 15 yrs a coal miner roadman.

Military History

Private Albert Varnam enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 18631 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He land in France on 2nd May 1915. He was killed in action on 22nd April 1918 and is buried in Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extention, Somme, France
